The Partnership Conduct Route

Threshold crossed: from available when asked to carrying.

The person closest to you experiences your character before anyone else does, and usually says so last.

In brief

How does a man improve his closest relationship without making his partner the judge of it? Four things that are entirely his to do: declare when he is coming back before walking away from a row, take one recurring load completely, give an hour a week with nothing attached, and raise the subject he has been steering around.

Who this practice is for

The man who is competent nearly everywhere else and runs his closest relationship on whatever attention is left over.

Open the protocol

Name which of the four below is weakest, and take that one first unless it is raising the subject. Nothing in this route asks your partner to assess you, rate you or take part. Every item is your own conduct, and it is done whether or not it is noticed.

Daily forge actions (30 days)

  1. Declare the return. Before you walk away from a conversation that is getting too hot, say when you are coming back. Then be back then. Leaving without a time is not space, it is a wait the other person has to absorb.
  2. Take one standing load. Own one recurring task completely, including remembering that it exists. Helping when asked is not carrying. Do not announce it.
  3. Give the unagended hour. One hour a week with no logistics, no problem to solve and no request at the end of it. If you catch yourself steering it somewhere useful, it has not happened yet.
  4. Raise the subject. Name one subject you have been steering around, at a time you choose rather than one a row chooses for you. Your own part in it first, and one subject, not the accumulated case.

The order matters

  • Declared return first, because conflict is where the most damage is done fastest, and the other three are hard to sustain in a house where arguments end in silences of unknown length.
  • The standing load second. It is the least verbal of the four and it buys the credibility the others need.
  • The unagended hour third, once a week exists in which an hour is not immediately needed for something else.
  • Raising the subject last. A man who starts here has chosen the most dramatic practice rather than the most useful one.

The weekly review

Where was I available rather than responsible? What subject am I steering around, and for how long now? When did I last give time with nothing attached to it? If she stopped holding the list tomorrow, what would stop happening?

Completion

A return time declared and kept under real pressure, one subject raised by you, a sustained weekly hour, and one load carried four weeks without a reminder. The route certifies conduct. It does not certify a relationship, which is not a thing a protocol gets to judge.

Caution. This assumes two people who are safe with each other and both want it to work. Where there is fear, control or harm in either direction, the route is support, not a protocol. None of these practices entitles you to anything afterwards: a man who does the four and then presents the invoice has understood it exactly backwards. The route also cannot tell you whether to stay. Nine Rites is not therapy and does not replace professional support.

Your life does not need another insight. It needs a threshold.
