Helping Is Not Carrying

In most households one person holds the list of what needs doing and the other is willing to be told. Doing the task is the visible job. Holding the fact that it exists is the one nobody counts.

A copper list held in one hand while a second open hand rests empty beside it.
In brief

What is the invisible half of running a household? Doing the task is one job; holding the fact that the task exists is the other, and it never finishes. Helping is responsive and waits to be asked. Carrying means owning one recurring thing completely, including remembering it exists, and not announcing that you have.

A man who would never let a colleague chase him for a deliverable will let his partner chase him for a dentist appointment, and will not experience the two as the same failure.

He is not lazy about it. Ask him and he will say, honestly, that he does a lot around the house, that he always helps when asked, and that she only has to tell him. He means all of it. That last clause is the problem, and he cannot hear it, because to him it sounds like an offer.

The difference is the list, not the effort

There are two jobs in any shared household, and only one of them is visible.

The first is doing the task. Cooking the dinner, booking the appointment, filling the form, buying the present, moving the washing. This is the part that takes time, produces a result, and can be pointed at afterwards.

The second is holding the fact that the task exists. Knowing the form has a deadline, that the shoes no longer fit, that the present needs buying before Thursday, that the dentist is every six months and it has been eight. This job has no output. It never finishes, it cannot be pointed at, and it runs whether or not anyone is at home.

Helping is the first job. Carrying is the second. A man can do a great deal of the first while doing almost none of the second, and from inside that arrangement it will feel like an equal split, because he is counting the only part he can see.

The tell is the sentence just tell me what to do. It sounds like willingness. Structurally it is a request to be managed, and it quietly confirms who the manager is.

Why the fair-sounding version is not fair

The obvious objection is worth taking seriously rather than brushed aside, because it is often sincerely held.

If two people agree that one of them is better at organising and the other is better at executing, and both are content, that is a division of labour like any other. Households run on specialisation. Nobody insists that both people file the tax return.

The objection holds right up to the point where the organising is not counted as work. A managing director and an executor is a legitimate arrangement when both parties know that managing is the harder half and it is priced accordingly. It stops being legitimate when one person's contribution is measured in completed tasks and the other's is measured in nothing at all, while she is also doing a full share of the completing.

So the test is not whether the split is equal. It is whether the invisible job has been named, valued, and shared even slightly.

What owning one thing actually means

The remedy is small and specific, and it is not a rebalancing conversation.

Take one standing, recurring task and own it completely. Not do it this once when reminded. Not help with it. Own it, including the part where you remember that it exists.

Three conditions make it real.

It has to recur. A one-off job, however large, is still a task. Painting the fence is not carrying. The car service every six months is.

It has to survive four weeks without a reminder. One good week proves willingness, which was never in doubt. Four consecutive weeks in which nobody had to raise it proves that the holding has actually moved, and the holding is the thing being transferred.

You do not announce it. This is the condition men find hardest and it is the one that matters most. An owned task that has to be noticed to count has not been given away, it has been traded. If you find yourself mentioning it, you have not taken a load off anyone; you have added a small administrative duty, which is to acknowledge you.

The reason this belongs in a men's practice at all

Because it is the clearest available test of a distinction this whole project rests on: the difference between being trustworthy and being helpful.

Helpful is responsive. It waits for a signal, performs well, and returns to standby. Trustworthy holds something when nobody is watching and nobody has asked. Most men are extremely helpful at home and would describe themselves as reliable on that basis. Reliability that requires a prompt is a different product, and the person supplying the prompts knows exactly which one she has.

It is also the least glamorous item in the Partnership domain, which is part of why it works. There is nothing to say about it afterwards. That is the point.

What this week asks

Name one recurring thing she currently holds. Not the biggest one, and not the one you would most enjoy doing. One that repeats, that you can absolutely do, and that you have historically done only when asked.

Take it. Say nothing about taking it. Then watch for the reminder that does not come, four weeks running.

If that proves easy, you were probably already carrying something and can take a second. If it proves surprisingly hard, you have found the thing this article is about, and it was never a question of effort.

Where this routes

The route is Partnership, through Rf 011 Partnership Conduct Route, where this is the second of four practices and deliberately not the first. The declared return comes first, because conflict is where damage is done fastest. This one comes next, because it is the least verbal of the four and it earns the credit the others need.

Boundary

This assumes two people who are safe with each other and who both want the relationship to work. Where there is fear, coercion or control in either direction, no protocol applies and the route is support.

It also assumes you have the capacity. Taking on a load you cannot sustain in order to make a point is a worse outcome than the arrangement you started with, because the load will come back with a broken promise attached to it.

And nothing here is owed a response. A man who owns a standing task and then waits for the thanks has converted a gift into an invoice, which is the specific failure this domain exists to name.

No empirical claim is made here about how household labour is distributed in general; the article describes an arrangement, not a statistic.
